葛西小学校の日本語学級は、昭和46年に開級しました。都内に設置されている日本語学級の中で、最も古い歴史があります。平成13年からは、他校からの通級も始まり、様々な国とつながりのある子どもたちが、日本語を学んでいます。これまでに中国、韓国、フィリピン、モンゴル、タイ、ネパール、インド、インドネシア、バングラデシュ、イエメン、エジプト、アメリカ、ベトナム、ブラジル、ペルー、ガーナなど、33の国と関わりをもつ子どもたちが学習してきました。学習内容としては、日本語や各教科の学習だけではなく、日本の文化を学んだり、自分と関わりのある国の文化の紹介もしています。
日本語学級には、日常会話が十分にできない児童はもちろん、日常会話には困らなくても、学年相当の学習言語能力が不足するため、学習活動への取組に困難さが生じている児童が多くいます。このような児童も日本語学級に通うことによって、授業で使う日本語を習得しています。国籍や居住歴などは、入級には関係なく、例えば、日本生まれ日本育ちの児童でも、家庭でお話しする言語が日本語以外の言語のため、日本語指導が必要で日本語学級に学習しに来る児童もいます。

The Japanese class of this school is the oldest junior high school in Tokyo. It was established in 1972(The 47thyear of Showa) because there was a temporary accommodation facility for expatriates in the school district. In 2010, a Japanese class was established at Koiwa Fourth Junior High School,where students from the northern part of the ward attend. May 1st, 2023 Currently there are 30 students enrolled and they accept regular atudents from 11 schools in the ward. Students commute from their school to this school for about two hours aweek and receive individual guidance. Total student Participation Countries.
